Do you have a mobile website design? If yes, that’s a great start. However, a mobile-friendly site means more than just looking good on a smartphone or tablet. So how do you know if your website is truly mobile- friendly?

Have you looked at your website’s analytics recently? Are your bounce rate and conversion rate low, even though you have a mobile website design?

That could mean a couple of things:

  • Your website may be taking too long to load. It needs to load in three seconds or less (one alligator, two alligator, three alligator), or you will lose customers. People do not want to wait – even for four seconds!
  • Visitors may be leaving your site because they can’t quickly and easily find the information they are looking for.

What is the purpose of your website? Is it for customers to make a purchase? Is your goal to generate sales leads? An effective mobile website design is simple in appearance, and displays the most critical call-to-action front and center. Whether it’s a “Buy Now!” button or a contact form, that information needs to be simple to find.

Is your mobile site just a scaled-down version of your traditional site? If so, that’s probably not going to get you the results you are looking for. In general, a customer viewing a site from a mobile device is not interested in reading lots of copy. They want to find the information they are looking for so they can move on. When developing your mobile website design, it’s a good idea to “hide” some of the more superfluous content (your company history, team biographies, or even your blog, for example) that may be part of your main website. Again, keep things simple for your mobile customers!

Here are a couple of last things to think about:

  • Has it been more than three years since your website was designed? If so, it’s probably time for an overhaul. Technology changes quickly, and your website needs to keep up for you to keep customers.
  • Can you update your website yourself? It is very helpful to be able to update your website content in-house, especially if it changes frequently. Your customers want accurate information, particularly when they are viewing your website “on the fly.”
